Abstract


The aim of this study was to find how much the extracts of Acorns calamus had an antibacterial effect on some cariogenic bacteria and which solvent has a more powerful effect of some solvent. Extracts of Acorns calamus were screened for their antibacterial activity against Streptococci mutans KCTC 3298, S. sobrinus KCTC 3307, S. cricetus KCTC 3292 and S. rattus KCTC 3294. We got the extracts of Acorns calamus by freeze dried and finely ground leaves with 2% DMSO(Di-methyl sulphur oxide) and water.
Water extract from Acorus calamus did not inhibit the growth of Streptococci mutans KCTC 3298, S. sobrinus KCTC 3307, S. cricetvs KCTC 3292 and S. rattus KCTC 3294 at the concentration of 4 mg/ml (p < 0.05). But methanolic extract from Acorus calamus significantly inhibited the growth of mutans streptococci at the concentration of 1 mg/ml (p < 0.05). Methanolic extract showed a antibacterial effect against mutans streptococci in a dose-dependent manner.
In conclusion, methanolic extract from Acorns calamus showed¢¥ antibacterial effect against mutans streptococci strains and this extract can be used as a possible anticariogenic agents.
